Happy early birthday to me...
Yes that’s part of a spring off the M3. No I have no fucking clue what happened. Yes I’m pissed off. No I’m not driving the M3 until I get it fixed. Yes I’m driving the Safari in the mean time.
*cries*
On the bright side, I ordered new H&R Sport Springs to replace them! 1.2 inch drop in the front and 1.0 inch in the back!
In the mean time I spent today getting the old springs out.
I was two bolts away from getting the front struts out. I got the rear springs out though, and those were probably living on borrowed time.
So now I wait untilthe new ones get here driving the Safari in the meantime as the car sits alone on the lift in the shop.
*cries harder*

I was about to suggesting getting some sort of upgrade to replace them. At least the old ones came out easily, I guess.

springs get old, esp after 170K miles. they had a good run.
I remember one of the spring on our saab broke...we never found out which one though...car drove the EXACT same and still rode level...

This is the perfect opportunity for a lift kit + 33" tires

Are those your tears in the corner?
I had to replace both rear coil spring in our Jetta after a similar thing happened a few years ago. It only had about 80k miles on it at the time.
Last month I had to replace both front strut towers after they rusted through.
Fun times.

I am going to have to do this for the Equinox. Looking over it I noticed the rear was broke similar to that. I’ve been pricing replacement parts.

I think that happens to all OE e36 springs, they just rust and crack. I had to do both on mine last year.
If I remember right though, the M3 springs are twice as expensive...

Not too bad of a job. Definitely get an alignment after though.

Thankfully despite all the rust on this car in random places, the shock mounts aren't one of them.

If I hadn’t had heard something make a loud popping noise id have been none the wiser. It drove totally normal.
